This breach of warranty suit stemmed from the restitution to Italy by the Springfield (Mass.) Library and Museum Association of a painting that Italy asserted had been stolen from its embassy in Warsaw during World War II. To recover its loss, the Library then brought an action against the Knoedler gallery (known in this case as Knoedler Archivum), from which it had purchased the painting in 1955. . . .
