In 1978, Shouky Shaheen purchased from Stephen Hahn a pastel entitled Mother About to Kiss Her Baby, purported to be the work of American Impressionist artist Mary Cassatt. In September, 1990, an appraisal by Christie’s auction house questioned the work's

 authenticity. Subsequently, on February 12, 1991, the Cassatt Committee for Authentication reviewed the work and declared that it would not be represented in its catalogue. . . .
