There is considerable introductory material, including studies on the artist's life and family, his early work, portraits of the Spanish King and others, his first Italian journey, the artist and court taste, royal hunts, paintings inspired by antiquity, his second trip to Italy, last period of service to the King, etc.

The catalogue raisonné is arranged by subject (biblical and religious, myths and history, genre, hunting and equestrian works, views, still-lifes, portraits, paintings for the royal family.
The catalogue includes 650 entries for known and recorded works of art attributed to Velázquez (this number is significantly reduced in the later editions of the catalogue raisonné).

Entries give number, title, description, some comments with reference to other scholarship, dimensions, collection and provenance information. It is not always clear if some entries have information current to the time of publication or is of an earlier date.

There is a chronology of extant works, concordance, a location index, and bibliography.

The introductory essay in the present publication (but not the catalogue) was enlarged and revised in the author's 1968 monograph, "Velázquez Work and World". Other revised editions of the catalogue raisonné were issued in 1979 Velázquez: The Artist as a Maker, with a Catalogue Raisonné of His Extant Works, and in 1996 Velázquez: Catalogue Raisonné.
