American Abstract Expressionism in a Global Context: A Conversation between Pepe Karmel and Jack Flam

Pepe Karmel, Ph.D. Associate Professor, Dept. of Art History, NYU; Author of Abstract Art: A Global History (Thames & Hudson, November 2020)
and
Jack Flam, Ph.D.
President, Dedalus Foundation and Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Art History, CUNY

Program Location:
A virtual program organized as a Zoom webinar

Pepe Karmel's acclaimed new book, Abstract Art: A Global History, has been chosen by the New York Times as one of the "Best Art Books of 2020."  It was described in Vogue magazine as "a complete rethinking of long-established narratives." This program was a rare opportunity to hear two renowned specialists of 20th Century Art discuss the "rethinking" of abstraction outlined in Pepe Karmel's new book. Special attention was given to the ways in which the American Abstract Expressionists are related to this expansive new view of abstract art, in which women and non-American artists play a major role.

Discussion and Q&A followed the talks.

This program was organized as a Zoom webinar. After registration (via the "Reserve & Pay Online" button at the top of this page), participation was  accessed through a Zoom link, which was sent to registrants by the next day.  We sent Zoom reminders to all registrants before the program.

NB.  Everyone -- including IFAR Supporters/Members -- registered via the "Reserve & Pay Online" button.
