- The catalogue lists approximately 150 works, all illustrated in color. Appendix A lists 13 colored works on paper cited in inventories, correspondence and oral tradition, but whose whereabouts are unknown.
Appendix B lists works of dubious attribution. A separate Appendix F lists forgeries including copies intended to deceive, graphic works watercolored by another hand, and free forgeries. There is also an essay on forgeries by Mayen Beckmann, the artist's granddaughter.

- The catalogue raisonné was published in conjunction with the 2006 exhibition of Beckmann's works in color on paper held at the Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt. The exhibition also travelled to the Museo Guggenheim, Bilbao, for which a Spanish language edition was published.
